General History

Heatherton was one of a class of coastal/harbour tugs built by various engineering firms, notably Russel Brothers of Owen Sound, Ontario, for the RCN in 1944/45.  They served in various capacities as the workhorses of the fleet in both of Canada's major naval bases for more than 30 years.  Since the mid 1970's, these tugs have all been retired, in several cases entering new careers in mercantile service.
